From Mount Olympus to Global Stages: Olympus Guitars’ Rise from Greek Roots to Rock Royalty

by Madonna

Olympus Guitars has quickly made a name for itself in Australia’s vibrant music scene, rising from humble beginnings to crafting instruments for global rock icons such as Alice Cooper and Orianthi. Founded by Johnny Prapas after migrating from Greece in 2018, the Sydney-based workshop blends traditional craftsmanship with a modern vision—proving that the company’s early success is only the beginning.

Since its inception, Olympus Guitars has gained a reputation for high-quality, hand-crafted guitars that resonate with musicians worldwide. The journey started in the Greek town of Leptokarya, nestled at the foot of Mount Olympus, where Prapas first discovered his passion.

“Growing up in a family of woodcutters, I learned to distinguish woods and appreciate their potential from a young age,” Prapas told Neos Kosmos. “It was during my apprenticeship under John Harrison from 1993 to 1995 that I honed my skills in creating fine acoustic and electric guitars.”

Relocating to Australia was no small feat, especially with the cultural and language barriers. But for Prapas, the Australian music community’s warmth and diversity helped him find his footing. “The transition was not easy, but the vibrant music scene and welcoming culture of Australia inspired me to continue my journey,” he said.

Crucial to this journey were friends like Darrell Wheeler and Hugh Coffey, who helped Prapas establish new relationships and find his place in a new country. “Their humour and support helped me navigate this transition. The beauty of Australia’s diversity complemented the traditions I brought from Greece,” he explained.

At the core of Olympus Guitars is a hands-on, collaborative approach to building instruments. Prapas works closely with musicians to understand their needs and artistic vision before selecting premium materials like Greek olive wood to shape each guitar. “Each guitar is hand-crafted, following standards refined over 26 years. From design to construction, it is a meticulous process that brings the musician’s dream to life,” he noted.

Even during the pandemic—a time of widespread uncertainty—Olympus Guitars thrived. Orders kept coming in, and the trust of their clients carried the business through. “It confirmed the power of art and music to bring comfort, even in the most difficult times,” Prapas shared.

A major highlight for the brand was working with Alice Cooper and Orianthi. “Working with legendary musicians like Alice Cooper and Orianthi was surreal,” said Prapas. Not only did they craft a guitar for Cooper, but they also donated a guitar signed by Orianthi to support Cooper’s Solid Rock Teen Centers. “The signed guitar was deeply satisfying. It felt like a dream come true.”

Olympus Guitars’ impressive client list doesn’t end there. They’ve also created instruments for artists like Eric Gales, Austin Hanks, Billy F. Gibbons, Arlen Roth, Victor Wooten, Miguel Montalban, Doug Seven, Lisa Perry, and Howard Glazer.

Reflecting on the company’s progress, Prapas expressed deep pride. “What started as a hobby after a small family business in Greece has now become an internationally recognised name in guitar,” he said. “The pride I feel is not just for the growth of Olympus Guitars but for the relationships we have built with artists and collaborators around the world.”

Despite their success, Prapas is already looking ahead. “My goal is to continue pushing boundaries, expanding our range of instruments, and inspiring the next generation through workshops and mentorship,” he stated. “Above all, I hope to keep blending cultures and connecting hearts through the power of music.”
