Get ready to shred thin air and unleash your inner rockstar—the Minneapolis Regional Air Guitar Championship is making its much-anticipated return this May in Fridley, Minnesota.
The event is scheduled for May 17 at Route 47 Pub & Grub, located at 7820 University Ave. NE, bringing a mix of outrageous performance and playful showmanship back to the stage.
“This whole thing is frickin’ ridiculous, nerdy, silly, and all of the above,” says The Lost Heartbreaker, Hall of Fame air guitarist and the evening’s emcee. “But that’s the beauty of it. In this wild ride called life, we need moments like this. It’s about stepping out of your comfort zone, celebrating life, spreading love and peace, and embracing everyone just as they are.”
The competition unfolds in two high-energy rounds. First, contestants get one minute to perform a song of their own choice. Then, the top scorers return to the stage to perform a surprise track selected by the judges.
Participants will be evaluated on three criteria: technical merit, stage presence, and their overall ability to transform invisible guitar playing into expressive performance art—a category known in the community as “airness.”
The grand prize? A round-trip flight to San Francisco to compete in the national finals of the Air Guitar Championship.
Anyone can join in, whether you’re a seasoned performer or just want to have some fun. Entry costs $15, while spectators can enjoy the night for just $10. All proceeds from the event go to Southern Anoka Community Assistance, a local food shelf and thrift store.
So stretch those fingers, warm up those imaginary strings, and get ready to rock—because air guitar greatness awaits.
