Environmental advocates and curious locals gathered on Virginia Street for the second annual “Earth Daze” event, a family-friendly festival cohosted by the City of Vallejo and event planning group, the Ever Wonder. The event, which aimed to celebrate Earth Day and all it represents, brought together the community to raise awareness about sustainability.
The theme of the event, “Our power, our planet,” highlighted the day’s goals of promoting environmental consciousness and community action.
The agenda was filled with activities designed to nurture both mind and body, including healing sound baths led by mindfulness educator Shaniece Thomas, outdoor yoga sessions by Vallejo’s Neighborhood Plant Dealer, and a community drumming circle. The celebration of sustainability also featured free massages, T-shirt printing, haircuts, local food trucks, and eco-friendly vendors offering their goods.
As with many downtown Vallejo events, the energy remained high throughout the day, thanks to beats from DJ Big Vince and MC Mr. Chubs of the Free Music Collective.
An interactive drumming circle, facilitated by Vallejo resident Damion Barrett, drew participants into the event’s rhythm. “Participatory events like this are really great, it’s really just a great way to show and highlight the city,” said Barrett.
Jeni Swerdlow of “Drummm Rhythmic Events” from Berkeley led the drum circle, encouraging participants of all ages to join in. “Listen to the groove and ask yourself, what does it mean? What is the groove asking of you?” Swerdlow prompted, as attendees swayed, danced, and smiled to the lively, collective sounds of the circle.
To help attendees explore local businesses and sustainable vendors around the Virginia Street block, Ever Wonder founder Jacqueline Wonder and her team introduced a unique passport initiative. Participants who visited the local businesses and engaged with the vendors received a sticker after each interaction. Those who collected four stickers were rewarded with a limited-edition Earth Daze T-shirt, designed by local artist Christian Alberto of Northstar Studios.
The initiative encouraged exploration of downtown businesses and included partners like Northstar Studios, My First Couch, Integritea, the Exchange, Provisions, and the Neighborhood Plant Dealer. The first 50 participants received free reusable water bottles as part of the event’s eco-conscious spirit.
Adding to the community spirit, Chop, a Vallejo resident and volunteer from Formulation Barber Shop, provided free haircuts throughout the event. “For me, these are cool events, whether it’s related to Earth Day or not, just being involved in the community and being able to give back to the community I’m a part of,” said Chop. “It is nice to just see people outside and be in the Vallejo that nobody likes to talk about.”
