Kurt Cobain’s smashed white Fender Stratocaster from 1992 has set a new record, selling for a staggering amount at auction.
Dylan Kosinski, president of the popular music auction site Gottahaverockandroll, told TMZ that the smashed guitar sold for $101,500 to a collector from Texas when bidding closed yesterday.
The iconic piece of music history sparked a heated bidding war, attracting five bidders who placed a total of 11 bids before the final buyer emerged victorious.
The auction had a minimum starting bid of $30,000, but the guitar’s final sale price far exceeded initial expectations.
As previously reported, Cobain smashed this guitar during Nirvana’s European tour in 1992. However, it was later restored to working condition while the band was still on the road.
The guitar originally came into the possession of a crewmember who worked with Nirvana from 1991 to 1993 and was later authenticated by Big John Duncan, the renowned guitar technician closely associated with the band.
While this isn’t the highest price ever paid for a Cobain guitar—his guitar used in the “Smells Like Teen Spirit” music video sold for $4.5 million—$100,000 is still a major payday, leaving the seller well in the “green spirit.”
