John Stamos Nails Papa Roach’s “Last Resort” on Drums—Without Ever Hearing It Before

by Madonna

John Stamos recently surprised fans by drumming along to Papa Roach’s hit “Last Resort”—despite never hearing the song before.

The Full House actor took part in YouTube channel Drumeo’s “For The First Time” challenge, hosted by Brandon Toews. The segment was filmed at Stamos’ home, where a full drum kit was already set up, and aired on Friday, April 25.

At 61, Stamos has been playing drums for years and has shared the stage with music legends like The Beach Boys, B.B. King, Tom Jones, John Fogerty, and Bruce Springsteen. However, “Last Resort”, Papa Roach’s 2000 breakthrough hit, had somehow escaped his radar until now.

“I would tell every drummer that ever gets a chance to do this—don’t,” Stamos joked at the start of the video.

For the challenge, Toews played the track with the drum part removed, giving Stamos the opportunity to improvise without any prior reference. His initial interpretation leaned toward what he described as a “pretty heavy metal kind of vibe.”

During one of his takes, his wife Caitlin McHugh and their son Billy wandered into the room, both covering their ears at the loudness and intensity.

With each attempt, Stamos’ performance improved as he picked up more of the song’s intricate details. After completing his final take—dripping in sweat from the intensity—he asked if the band was Ozzy Osbourne. Toews then revealed that the drummer behind the original track was David Buckner of Papa Roach, and that Stamos’ interpretation was surprisingly close to the actual beat.

“I think I barely lived through it,” Stamos said afterward. “I haven’t heard me play it yet, so I don’t know about that. But I survived.”

Fans were delighted by the unexpected crossover. One YouTube user commented, “Never in my 32 years on earth did I ever expect I’d watch a video of John Stamos playing Papa Roach on drums.” Another viewer noted, “It’s f—— insane how good drummers almost always find something insanely close to the original song.”

Others couldn’t help but comment on Stamos’ multiple talents. “Personally I don’t think it’s fair that John Stamos is this talented AND handsome. Really couldn’t have the decency to be only one,” one user teased. Another added, “The wife coming through passively complaining about the noise and how long the activity has been going on…terribly relatable.”

This isn’t the first time Stamos has showcased his drumming skills. In July 2024, he and his son Billy joined The Beach Boys on stage during their Endless Summer Gold 2024 Tour in Michigan.

“Had a little help from my son BILLY on Good Vibrations last night,” he captioned a video on Instagram. “Wasn’t it nice! @thebeachboys.”
