- Origins of the Prairie Saxophone Initiative
The Prairie Saxophone Initiative (PSI), established in 2022 by accomplished Canadian Saxophonists Chinley Hinacay (MMUS) and Matthew Robinson (MMUS), embarks on its mission to elevate the saxophone’s presence in the Prairies’ musical landscape. Rooted in a vision of fostering awareness, broadening repertoire, and cultivating opportunities for burgeoning saxophonists, PSI is at the forefront of musical advancement.
PSI’s multifaceted efforts encompass collaborations with underrepresented Canadian composers through commissioned works, instrumental workshops catered to students and adult enthusiasts alike, and the curation of engaging concert programs accessible to diverse audiences. Their endeavors have already borne fruit, with two annual tours of the Canadian Prairies since 2022, spanning 13 communities, both large and small. These tours encompass not only riveting performances but also valuable workshops and clinics, bolstered by the participation of local artists.
Furthermore, PSI’s artistic prowess extends to collaborations with renowned ensembles such as the Pacific Symphonic Wind Ensemble and the Winnipeg Wind Ensemble, showcasing their instrumental mastery on esteemed platforms.
Pioneering Canadian Compositions and Global Recognition
An essential facet of PSI’s mission is the orchestration of new compositions by underrepresented Canadian composers. Through their commitment to this endeavor, they have contributed significantly to the enriching canon of duo saxophone repertoire. The culmination of this dedication will be showcased in December 2023, as PSI prepares to grace the World Saxophone Congress in the Canary Islands, where they will present a program proudly featuring their commissioned works.
In a harmonious convergence of time and melody, the Prairie Saxophone Initiative’s “Time Converged” promises to captivate audiences with its fusion of classical grandeur and contemporary innovation. As the curtains rise, the notes of history echo alongside the cadence of the present, charting a melodious course through centuries past and present.
