Ilê Aiyê, a renowned carnival block hailing from Salvador, Bahia, Brazil, brings the rich traditions of Afro-Brazilian culture to the heart of San Francisco. Founded in 1974 by Antônio Carlos “Vovô” and Apolônio de Jesus, Ilê Aiyê holds the distinction of being the oldest Afro-Brazilian block in existence.
Rooted in the Yoruba language, the name Ilê Aiyê loosely translates to ‘home of life,’ signifying its deep connection to the earth. This institution has played a vital role in raising awareness and promoting the cultural heritage of the Bahian black community. Despite facing early challenges, including persecution by law enforcement and the media, Ilê Aiyê persevered, standing as a symbol of Bahia’s vibrant carnival scene.
Notably, Ilê Aiyê pioneered the bloco afro carnival group concept, celebrating themes from global black cultures and history while embracing the aesthetic beauty of black individuals. Their influence extends to numerous Afro-Brazilian blocos, with groups like Olodum and Malê Debalê drawing inspiration from their pioneering spirit.
These workshops are presented by Dance Mission’s Liberation Academy, with support from the Dream Keeper’s Initiative. It’s an exceptional opportunity to immerse yourself in the captivating rhythms and movements of Afro-Brazilian culture, guided by the expertise of Ilê Aiyê.
Dance Mission Theater invites all enthusiasts of dance, music, and culture to participate in these workshops and experience the vibrant energy of Ilê Aiyê. Don’t miss this chance to be part of an extraordinary journey into Afro-Brazilian traditions.
