Dear Members of the Board,
We, the undersigned, 72 alumni and current/former students of the Cleveland Institute of Music (CIM), are writing to express our deep concerns regarding recent developments that have cast a shadow over the institution’s reputation for elite music education.
The recent and regrettable resignation of Michael Sachs, a revered figure in the world of music education, has prompted us to voice our apprehensions about the current state of CIM. As individuals who have collectively contributed over 30 years to the institution’s legacy, we feel compelled to address what we perceive as a crisis.
Michael Sachs has been an integral part of the brass department for decades, serving as a cornerstone in shaping the culture of CIM. His influence extends globally, with his pedagogical approach producing alumni who now perform with the world’s top ensembles, lead prestigious music programs, and serve as industry leaders. The unique access to Michael and the Cleveland Orchestra has been a defining aspect of CIM’s reputation.
We emphasize Michael’s invaluable contributions as an educator, author, and mentor. His reputation, the success of his students, his remarkable sound, and his profound insights into world-class ensembles have inspired generations of musicians who chose CIM and Cleveland’s University Circle to pursue their aspirations.
The current questioning of Michael’s character and intentions at CIM is deeply unsettling to us. Michael has a proven track record of not only cultivating exceptional musical talent but also instilling values crucial to navigating the demands of a performer’s life. His emphasis on ethics, collaboration, and attentive listening on and off stage has been integral to the success and well-being of his students.
We appeal to you, as stewards of our cherished institution, to thoroughly examine CIM’s priorities and the recent events that have disrupted decades of achievement. We write with hope that a path can be forged for the restoration of CIM’s relationship with Michael Sachs and his students. Our desire is to continue being proud alumni of the Cleveland Institute of Music, preserving its legacy as a world-renowned center for musical excellence.
