Renowned Rock and Roll Hall of Famer James Burton is set to represent Shreveport-Bossier on the Louisiana float at the 2024 Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, California, scheduled for January 1, 2024.
Hailing from Shreveport, Burton’s musical journey began at the age of 14 when he discovered a ’53 Fender Telecaster, marking the commencement of an extraordinary career. Serving as a staff musician for the Louisiana Hayride radio show and later joining Bob Luman’s Band for the “Carnaval Rock” performance in Los Angeles, Burton’s unique guitar style quickly garnered attention, eventually leading him to become Elvis Presley’s band leader until the King’s passing in 1977.
In a press release, Burton humorously recalled the beginnings of his musical odyssey, stating, “They told me ‘You don’t have to have any talent to play on the Hayride.’ So, that’s why they let me on stage!”
Expressing excitement about the Rose Parade, Stacy Brown, president and CEO of Visit Shreveport-Bossier, highlighted the pride in returning to the parade, this time with James Burton as the representative. Last year, the city made its debut with a float representing Shriner’s Hospital, and this year, with the parade theme centered around music, Burton is a fitting choice.
With a stellar career that includes collaborations with icons such as Frank Sinatra, Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton, Glenn Campbell, and Bob Dylan, James Burton has etched his name in various halls of fame, including the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, The Musicians Hall of Fame, The Academy of Country Music Hall of Fame, The Rockabilly Hall of Fame, The Louisiana Music Hall of Fame, and The Fender Guitar Hall of Fame. His multiple Grammy wins further solidify his musical legacy.
Adding a personal touch to the parade, Burton’s two grandchildren, Skylar Blythe and Taylor Burton, will accompany him, with one riding on the float and the other walking alongside. His wife of 65 years, Louise, will be in the stands to witness the momentous occasion.
Expressing his honor to represent Shreveport-Bossier and Louisiana, Burton stated, “It’s going to be a great time.”
The 2024 Rose Parade, a highlight of the Pasadena Tournament of Roses®, will be broadcast live at 10:00 am CT on ABC and NBC. The parade will feature hundreds of entries floating down the 5.5-mile route, showcasing the rich musical legacy of Shreveport-Bossier through the iconic James Burton.
