Renowned jazz saxophonist and Palestine High School alum, Art Sherrod Jr., is set to grace the stage of the PHS auditorium for a free concert on January 20 at 7 p.m. The performance, sponsored by the Alexander W. Gregg Fund, promises an evening of soulful melodies and captivating jazz, open to the entire community.
The homecoming celebration doesn’t end there, as Sherrod will engage with local band students on January 19, a day before the concert. Having previously inspired PHS band students in 2019, Sherrod’s dedication to nurturing young musical talent is evident. In 2014, he contributed his musical prowess to a fundraising effort, aiding the band’s purchase of a trailer for instrument transportation to various events.
Growing up in Palestine, Sherrod’s musical journey began at the age of 13 when he started playing the saxophone, earning money for his own instrument by mowing lawns and washing cars. After initially pursuing general sciences at the United States Naval Academy, Sherrod reignited his passion for music and decided to make a career of it in the Washington, D.C. area.
Sherrod’s stellar career includes collaborations with the likes of Cuba Gooding, Sr., Natalie Cole, Chaka Khan, and CeCe Peniston. As a member of the Recording Academy, he contributes to the selection of Grammy awards annually. His genre-spanning music, ranging from R&B hits to smooth jazz and spiritual gospel, has earned him global recognition.
Familiar tunes like “Rhythm of Life,” “Smooth Groove,” and “Seasons” have become staples on Sirius XM radio’s Watercolors channel. Sherrod’s discography includes albums such as “All 4 Love,” “Seasons,” “Back 2 Business,” “Intervention,” and “Art of Love.”
In addition to his musical pursuits, Sherrod holds a master’s degree in business from the University of Phoenix, leveraging his knowledge to successfully manage his music business.
Rhonda Herrington, director of fine arts for PHS, expressed gratitude for Sherrod’s return, emphasizing the joy he brings to playing music in his hometown. The community looks forward to experiencing the magic of Art Sherrod Jr. and his band during this special homecoming concert.
