Russell’s work celebrates the assertion of existence through culture, art, music, and community, echoing the powerful declaration, “still here.”
In addition to “Still Here,” Jonathan Russell will present his composition “Sonata #2 for Bass Clarinet and Piano.” This composition, characterized by its light and groove-driven elements, conceals darker undertones beneath its surface, providing a contrasting yet complementary musical experience.
The program also features Francis Poulenc’s vibrant and character-rich “Sonata for Clarinet and Piano.” Renowned for its colorful expression, Poulenc’s composition adds a dynamic layer to the evening, contributing to the exploration of diverse emotional landscapes.
Completing the repertoire is Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s evocative “Sorrow Songs,” a poignant composition that resonates with emotional depth and sensitivity.
The performers for this extraordinary musical journey are Jonathan Russell, showcasing his mastery on clarinet and bass clarinet, and Solon Gordon, contributing his skillful piano accompaniment. Their collaboration promises an evening of musical excellence that captures the essence of sorrow, resilience, and joy.
